Canarian Taxation
In the Canary Islands, there are two administrations involved in the importation of goods. On one hand, Customs, which depends on the State Tax Administration Agency (Government of Spain), and on the other hand, the Canary Islands Tax Agency (ATC).
In the Canary Islands, there are two import taxes, the IGIC and the AIEM.
Additionally, there are other special taxes that apply to certain products at a lower tax rate than the rest of the European Union.
Para-Customs Controls
Para-customs controls are complementary measures to customs controls applied to certain types of goods, aimed at strengthening border security and integrity.
- Sanitary controls: Monitoring and supervision of potential health risks associated with the importation of products from external countries.
- Phytosanitary controls: Implementation of safeguards against the entry and spread of harmful organisms to plants and products derived from them.
- Animal health: Validation of compliance with European standards regarding the animal health of products imported from external nations.
- CITES: Ensure the preservation of wild fauna and flora species at risk of extinction through the regulation and monitoring of their trade.

The SOIVRE Inspection Service plays a fundamental role as an inspection entity at border points. During the importation process, it ensures that regulatory standards are met in terms of commercial quality, safety, and the absence of pesticide residues. Goods that must undergo this procedure include:
- Agricultural and food products
- Industrial products
- Organic products
- Electrical and electronic devices (EEE)
- Batteries and accumulators
REA / MEA
The Specific Supply Regime (REA) is a measure aimed at ensuring the supply of essential agricultural products in ultra-peripheral regions, such as the Canary Islands. This aid is determined considering various factors, including additional transportation costs, export prices to external countries, as well as costs derived from ultra-peripherality and insularity.
It is called REA if it is a European product imported to the Canary Islands, while it is designated as MEA if it is a product from outside the European Union.
- Agricultural products included in Annex I of the EU founding treaty, essential for human consumption, the production of other products, or use as agricultural inputs.
- An annual list is drawn up specifying the quantities of each product that may be exempt from tariff payments, as well as the maximum amounts of financial aid from the European Community.
- Products from outside the European Union are exempt from the external tariff, while products of Community origin may receive financial assistance.
Transportation subsidies
Subsidies are offered for the transportation of goods in shipments between islands, from the Canary Islands to the peninsula, the European Union, as well as from the peninsula and the EU to the Canary Islands.
These subsidies will cover up to 100% of the transportation costs, except for oil and its derivatives, which will receive a 10% compensation. However, these aids are subject to annual budget allocations included in the general state budgets.
